Band News – Mr. Zarzycki

  • The show went well at the first football game
  • The band students are a strong group, fun to work with and cooperative.
  • The Marching Band will wear uniforms this year. If your student does not have a uniform contact Kim Rovinski or Stefanie Lewis.
  • The Invitational, scheduled for October 3rd, will be cancelled this year due to a limited response from other schools. The Invitational is a performance event in which bands from other schools, and the Groves band, perform their halftime show in the football stadium.
  • Volunteer Openings
    • Uniforms – Stefanie Lewis, who is organizing our uniforms, needs assistance.  Students received their marching band uniforms during the first trimester. Second trimester band students will receive tuxedos and tuxedo skirts, to be worn with a white tuxedo shirt. Students keep these tuxedos until they are no longer in the band. At that time, they return the tuxedos and keep the white shirts. Uniforms for the school year consist of the marching band uniform, tuxedos for concerts and a black polo shirt for the May parades. Kim will send an e-mail to parents to let them know when tuxedos are being passed out.
    • Football Game Snacks – a snack and a drink are provided for the students after the halftime show. Jerry and Lisa Mirenda organize this and need the help of additional volunteers.
    • Concert After-Glow – We need volunteers to organize an after-glow for our concerts.
    • Conference Night Fundraising – We are considering a fund-raising activity during parent teacher conferences, such as a cookie, chocolate or water bottle sale. Let Kim know if you can organize this or have any other ideas.
    • Photographer – We need volunteer photographers to take pictures of our band to be posted on our web site, in the school hallway and placed in the football program. Bruce Fisher has volunteered to help with this effort. If you have photos of our band you can send them to our Webmaster, Bobby Glanton. There is a link to the Webmaster on our band web site. Janice Hausman, in charge of publicity, is trying to have a local newspaper publicize our band.
    • Sally Foster Gift Wrap- a sale of Sally Foster items is a fundraiser that we’ve done in the past. We need a volunteer to organize this event.
    • Entertainments Books – We have also sold Entertainment books, and need a volunteer to organize this. There is a profit of $6 per book - sell 5 books and get one for free.
    • Summer Band Camp Coordinator

Budget Report – Bruce Fisher

  • The current balance in our general fund is $10,220.
  • There is $2895 in individual student accounts for future trips.
  • There is $3590 in the Cameron Fund.
  • The band subsidized last year’s trip to Washington, D.C.
  • For the 2008/2009 school year we began with $10,500 in our general fund and ended the year with $10,100 in our general fund.
  • Student fund-raising efforts to raise money for individual student accounts earned as follows: $1851.50 for the Pizza Kit sale; $752 for the sale of Entertainment books; $689 for the Sally Foster Gift Wrap sale.
  • Membership report - We have received $1100 in Band Booster donations from 22% of our families.

Fundraising - The Band has two types of fundraising events:

  •  Individual Students Fundraisers – This includes the sale of Sally Foster Gift items, pizza kits and Entertainment books. Whatever profit is made goes into the student’s individual student account for that student to put toward band trips. This money rolls over from year to year. After the student graduates the money may go to the student account of a sibling. If not, it goes into the band’s general fund.
  • Fundraising for the general fund - The money in the general fund is for the band’s use to pay for band needs, such as new instruments, repair of instruments, sheet music and additional instructors during band camp. Five instructors were brought in to support band camp this past summer. In the past the band has raised money by hosting the Band Invitational and the MSBOA (Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association) Festival. For example, last year the band raised $4500 at the Invitational, we spent $1500 and netted $3000. This year we will not be able to hold the Invitational due to the limited responses from other schools. In addition, we cannot participate in the MSBOA Festival because it occurs two weeks after the third trimester begins. Only students enrolled in the band for the third trimester may participate, and there is not enough time for them to rehearse. Last year’s band banquet, an event which also brought in money for our general fund, was changed to an awards presentation and after-glow following the final spring concert. Due to the loss of these events, we need to find other sources of revenue. Possible fundraising ideas discussed include:
    • A direct appeal to band families for donations.
    • Corporate Sponsorship – A sponsor would donate funds and be listed in our concert programs.
    • Tag Day – Groups of students gather at arranged locations to ask for donations. A committee is being formed to look into this.

This year we will devote our time to maintaining our general fund. Next
Year we will focus on building individual student accounts.

Sale of Merchandise – Band clothing items are for sale. We have sweatshirts for $25, hats for $12 and fleece zip ups may be special ordered – call Kim for pricing information. Contact Kim Rovinski if you want to make a purchase.

It was decided that Kim Rovinski’s name would be added to our bank account.       .
